Why do I need to keep rings clean? RING CLEANING & REBUILDING
(For Sintered and Herr-type solid steel rings)

Dirt, debris and oxidized oil build up and can cause plugging or blockage in any kind of porous ring or a ring with internal passageways.

Ring cleaning and rebuilding brings rings to like-new condition and reduces the need to purchase new rings.

Cause tension variation resulting in ends-down, chafed yarn, scrap and non-uniform packages; also damage to the yarn bundle. Reduce broken ends by 50%.

Cause oil leakage, wastage and mess. Conserve oil and time spent cleaning from leaks.

How often do I need to have rings cleaned? Ring manufacturers recommend that cleaning and refurbishing (including rewicking) be done at least every 2-3 years if rings are run with a petroleum ring oil, or every 4-5 years if run with a pure synthetic ring oil. Fine denier rings or high density sintered rings should be reconditioned more frequently.
What is Certified Ring Cleaning? EPIC'S QUALITY ASSURANCE
Not all rings clean easily or in the same way. Rings must be tested with a Porosimeter in order to certify to the standards of a new ring. If rings do not meet the standard of a new ring, they are recleaned until they can be certified to new ring standards.

Rings are also inspected visually and with instruments to detect such faults as cracks, chattermarks, scalloping, surface finish and poresmearing. This is done so corrective action can be taken if required.
When do I need to have a ring refaced? REFACING AND REPAIR
Lubricated rings run with steel travelers will eventually show chattermarking and scalloping of the ring. Normally this damage will start to become visually evident in 4-5 years. At the same time, there is usually a loss in productivity because of tension spikes caused by an unsteady traveler. If this damage is detected early, Epic can reface the ring at minimal cost. In some cases that ring can be refaced 5-6 times extending life to perhaps 25 years. Surface damage is progressive. If rings are allowed to run too long with chattermarks, the ring might only be refaced 1-2 times before replacement is required.

Herr or European style solid steel rings are also rewicked at the time of refacing.

If sintered rings running nylon travelers are not regularly cleaned and rebuilt, the loss of lubrication combined with particulate matter caught between ring and traveler will result in surface damage. This damage can be severe scratching, chattermarking, bottom radius scalloping, or pore smearing. If damage is not excessive, Epic can reface the ring to return to like-new condition.

Fine denier sintered rings (e.g., drawtwisting rings) run with steel travelers will often show chattermarking and bottom radius fretting from loss of lubrication through ring plugging. Similarly, these rings can usually be refaced to produce a like-new ring.

Holders can also be replaced.

REPLACEMENT OR NEW RINGS
Most of our customers prefer to use certified, like-new assemblies because of their lower cost. That's why we have about 500,000 available assemblies. We have the world's largest inventory or replacement rings and assemblies. If we are ever unable to supply an unusual sized ring or assembly in like-new condition, we can usually supply a new ring, holder, or assembly.
When would I need loaner rings? LOANER RINGS OR ASSEMBLIES
Many plants have only a few replacement rings. A whole plant cleaning program would mean excessive lost production. If you are committed to a whole plant reconditioning program, Epic can usually supply you a loaner set of rings or ring assemblies. This usually means your frame is only down for one shift while the old rings are removed and the reconditioned ones are installed. When you complete your reconditioning program, the last set of rings is returned to us. Call for details.

RING AIDS AND SUPPLIES
Epic Ring Service offers EPI-BRITE, a heavy duty pad specifically made for external ring cleaning. Also available are ring parts including wicks, windows, felts, etc. Epic also offers its fugitive EPIMARK crayons for identifying yarns and marking fabrics. Marks are cold water soluble.
